Rooted in DIY culture, zines are often vibrant, quirky, and bursting with personality, which is exactly why they’re the perfect companion for the witchy and mystical.
A Brief History of Zines: From Punk to the Mystical Realm
The history of zines stretches back to the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that zines became a cultural phenomenon. Born out of underground movements and DIY punk rock ethos, zines were a means for people to share stories, ideas, and art that didn't fit into the mainstream media.
The zine community was fueled by a sense of rebellion and independence, and over the years, it blossomed into an inclusive space for anyone to create and share their own unique voice.
Though the rise of digital platforms and social media has shifted how we communicate, zines still maintain a sense of intimacy and tactile charm that nothing else can replace. They allow creators to reclaim ownership of their stories and express themselves freely—no rules, no gatekeepers. It’s this raw and honest energy that makes zines such a natural fit for the world of tarot and witchcraft.
